A concert to benefit
On Saturday night I was in Alicante, covering a benefit concert for the Royal British Legion here in Spain.
You can read all about it in The Leader on Monday, and I will post it here too, but the concert was actually rather good.
Despite my own feelings about charity, war, soldiers etc, one cannot help but acknowledge the work that the volunteers for organisations like the RBL actually do. They raise a lot of funds that benefit a lot of people and with the Royal British Legion in Spain, all funds raised stays in Spain to help those in need.
The only thing I didn´t like about the event was the fact that it was a “benefit” concert. Now, that seems like an odd statement to make, but the reason I say it is that I question who actually benefits.
I have nothing but praise for those who donated their time and efforts for free to help raise the money, but I wonder how much the artists actually got paid. Well, I say I wonder, but I actually know, I am just not prepared to say as it´s not my place to.
There are a lot of celebrities who “support” charities and organisations, but let us not forget they they too benefit from the notoriety that comes with being a supporter for any kind of cause.
If the artists did give their time for free, then great, they deserve the credit as it is due, but if they made a profit from the event, then I personally question their morality and if they truly do deserve the praise and recognition that they would have achieved from being part of this, or indeed any other such event.
Those who donated anything, albeit it time, money, products… literally anything, then you deserve a huge pat on the back. However, if you profited from the misfortune of others, then consider your actions, consider how you can put it right, donate your fee, or shame on you… In my humble opinion.
